The Sicilian language, which naturally evolved from Latin, was for centuries relegated to the status of a dialect. It has now been officially recognised as a language in its own right by UNESCO and by the Sicilian region.
Sicilian holds the oldest literary tradition of the Italo-Romance languages. Frederick II, King of Sicily, founded the prestigious School of Sicilian Poetry back in 1220, which gave new breath to this beautiful language and tradition.
