Liverpool’s Italian connection

Liverpool had a Little Italy of its own — the streets around Gerard Street, near the city centre, where Italians settled in the nineteenth century in search of work. Their fingerprints are still on the city: Italian hands laid the intricate mosaic floors of St George’s Hall, and Italian families established ice cream and fish-and-chip businesses across Liverpool.

Little Italy itself lasted until the 1960s, when the tenements around Scotland Road were demolished and families moved to the city’s outskirts — but a story like that doesn’t vanish; it spreads. Every time you cross those mosaic floors, you’re walking on Italian artistry. Learning Italian in Liverpool isn’t a novelty — it’s a homecoming.

Are lessons for Liverpool students online or in person?

Online, over Microsoft Teams. I’m a native Italian teacher based in Gloucestershire, so my Liverpool students see me on screen rather than across a table — and honestly, the lessons lose nothing. We speak, listen, read and correct together in real time, every week.

What do your Italian lessons cost?

My one-to-one rate is £30 per hour. There’s also a ten-week online beginners course for £150, starting Wednesday 16 September at 5.00–6.30pm — ninety minutes a week in a small group of learners.

I’ve never learnt a language before — can you still teach me?

Yes — you’d be surprised how many of my students say exactly this. I trained as a teacher in both Italy and the UK, and I know how to build confidence step by step. We go at your pace, and you’ll be speaking Italian sooner than you think.
