London’s Italian connection

London’s Italian heart beats in Clerkenwell. This was the city’s ‘Little Italy’, home to around 12,000 Italians by 1895 — a bustling quarter centred on Clerkenwell Road, Farringdon Road and Rosebery Avenue.

Even Giuseppe Mazzini, hero of Italian unification, was based in London in the 1840s and founded a free school for poor Italians on the edge of the quarter. When we meet online for lessons, you are continuing a conversation London and Italy have shared for two centuries — one I am delighted to keep alive.

Common questions

Do you teach in person in London or online?

My lessons for London students are online over Microsoft Teams. I’m based in Gloucestershire, so online is how I teach everyone outside my local area — and it works wonderfully. You skip the commute, we share materials on screen, and lessons fit neatly around your working day.

How much do Italian lessons cost?

One-to-one lessons are £30 an hour, and you only pay for the lessons you book. If you’d prefer a small group, my ten-week online beginners course is £150 — Wednesdays from 16 September, 5.00 to 6.30pm, in a small group.

I have Italian family roots in London — can you help me reconnect with the language?

I’d love to. London’s Italian community goes back generations — Clerkenwell was once known as Little Italy — and many of my students grew up hearing Italian at family tables without ever learning it properly. We can build on the words and sounds you already carry with you.

Did London really have a Little Italy?

It did — in Clerkenwell, around Clerkenwell Road, Farringdon Road and Rosebery Avenue. Italians began arriving in the early 1800s, and by 1895 the community numbered around 12,000. Giuseppe Mazzini himself spent his 1840s exile in London and founded a free school for the quarter’s poor Italians. The Italian story is woven right into London.
