Sheffield’s Italian connection

Sheffield had its own Little Italy in the West Bar area, where Italian immigrants settled from the 1860s as ice-cream sellers, street musicians and mosaic artisans, with some finding work in the city’s steel and cutlery trades. Families like the Cuneos made ice cream here for 155 years, and Granelli’s — founded in 1873 by Luigi Granelli from Genoa — is still run by his descendants over 150 years later.

The community faced hard times too: during the Second World War many families moved away or anglicised their names. That makes it all the lovelier, to my mind, that people in Sheffield are choosing to learn Italian today — reconnecting with a story the city has carried for generations.

Is it possible to have face-to-face lessons in Sheffield?

My Sheffield lessons are online over Microsoft Teams rather than face-to-face, as I live in Gloucestershire. Online teaching lets me offer flexible times, share materials instantly and model pronunciation for you to practise between lessons — many students tell me they actually prefer it.

How much will Italian lessons cost me?

One-to-one lessons are £30 an hour, booked as and when you need them. Alternatively, my ten-week online beginners course costs £150 — Wednesdays 5.00 to 6.30pm from 16 September, in a small group.

Is it too late to learn Italian as an adult?

Never — most of my students are adults, and plenty started in their fifties, sixties or later. Adults bring patience, motivation and life experience to learning, which children rarely have. With regular lessons and a little practice, you will absolutely get there. I’ve seen it hundreds of times.
