Cirencester was Corinium once — one of the great towns of Roman Britain — so Italian has deeper roots here than almost anywhere in England. I’m Laura, a native Italian teacher from Catania in Sicily, based in Dursley on the other side of the Cotswold edge. Whether you’re learning for travel, family or the sheer pleasure of it, I teach one-to-one lessons online over Microsoft Teams, and as Cirencester isn’t far from me, in-person options may be possible as well.

Cirencester’s Italian connection

Whenever I walk through Cirencester I feel a step closer to home. This was Corinium, second only to London in size in Roman Britain — English Heritage estimates that over 10,000 people lived here — with an amphitheatre built just outside the walls early in the second century AD that held around 8,000 spectators and remains one of the largest to survive.

Corinium began life as a Roman fort and is widely accepted as the capital of the province of Britannia Prima. According to the Corinium Museum, over 90 mosaics are known from the town and surrounding area — the largest concentration outside London. The language of those mosaic-makers grew into Italian, and learning it here feels like continuing a very old conversation.

Common questions

Are lessons for Cirencester students online, or can we meet in person?

Both options exist. I teach online over Microsoft Teams, which most Cirencester students find easiest, but I’m based near Dursley and in-person lessons near me can be arranged too. We’ll simply pick whichever suits your week — or happily mix the two.

How much do you charge for Italian lessons?

£30 an hour for one-to-one tuition. If you’re beginning from scratch, my ten-week online beginners course costs £150 altogether — Wednesdays from 16 September, 5.00 to 6.30pm, in a small, friendly group.

Do I need any previous Italian to join?

None whatsoever. Every course and lesson I offer can start from absolute zero — that’s where most of my best students began. We’ll cover pronunciation, everyday phrases and simple conversation early on, so the language feels useful from week one rather than something abstract.
