Italian Lessons in Stroud

Stroud feels familiar to me — I already teach learners nearby, and the five valleys, the farmers’ market and the town’s independent spirit remind me a little of home in Sicily, where good food and good conversation matter. I’m Laura, a native Italian teacher from Catania, now based in Dursley just along the valley. My lessons are one-to-one online over Microsoft Teams, relaxed and practical, and with Stroud so close, in-person arrangements can sometimes work too.

Stroud’s Italian connection

The hills around Stroud hide a genuinely Italian treasure. At Woodchester lies a great Roman villa whose Orpheus mosaic, laid around AD 325, is the largest Roman mosaic found in Britain and the second largest of its kind in Europe — an intricate scene of Orpheus charming all forms of life with his lyre.

Local brothers John and Bob Woodward recreated it in full size from over one and a half million pieces of stone, and their replica sold at auction in June 2010 for £75,000. Nearby Frocester, four miles west of Stroud, was a Roman settlement on the road from Cirencester — its very name means ‘Roman town on the Frome’. Voices from Italy once carried through these valleys, and learning Italian here simply picks up the thread.

Do you offer face-to-face lessons in Stroud, or just online?

For Stroud, genuinely both. Dursley is my home patch, so face-to-face lessons nearby are often possible — and of course I teach online over Microsoft Teams if that fits your life better. Several students alternate between the two, which works beautifully.

What do lessons cost?

One-to-one lessons are £30 an hour, whether we meet in person or online. My ten-week online beginners course is £150 — starting Wednesday 16 September, 5.00 to 6.30pm weekly, in a friendly small group.

I’ve never spoken a word of Italian — can I still start?

Yes — and you’ll speak your first words in our very first lesson, I promise. I’ve been teaching absolute beginners for over twenty years, in Italy and here in Gloucestershire. Join the September beginners course, or start one-to-one lessons whenever you’re ready.

Is there really a Roman mosaic near Stroud?
