I’m Laura, a native Italian speaker from Catania, Sicily, and I’ve been teaching Italian for over twenty years. From my home in Dursley, Gloucester is practically on my doorstep, and I love how the city wears its history — the old docks, the warehouses given new life. Gloucester’s Italian connection

Gloucester’s Italian connection is as old as the city itself. It began as a Roman legionary fortress, and in AD 97 the Emperor Nerva made it a colonia — Colonia Nervia Glevensium — a settlement of retired legionaries that held the highest status of city in the Roman Empire.

That history is still on the street: Nerva rides his bronze horse in Southgate Street, where his statue was erected in 2002; the East Gate Chamber displays the remains of the Roman and medieval East Gate; and Roman mosaics were even found beneath the former Debenhams. When my Gloucester students practise Italian with me over Teams, I love reminding them that the language of Rome has felt at home here from the very beginning.

Common questions

Do you teach in person in Gloucester or online?

Both are possible. I teach most students online over Microsoft Teams, but Gloucester is close to home for me — I’m near Dursley — so we may be able to arrange face-to-face lessons as well. Whichever you choose, you get the same patient, native-speaker teaching.

How much are your Italian lessons?

£30 an hour for one-to-one lessons, online or face-to-face. My online beginners course is £150 for ten weeks — Wednesday evenings from 16 September, 5.00 to 6.30, in a small group so everyone speaks every week.

Can I join as a complete beginner?

Of course. Complete beginners are exactly who my ten-week course was designed for, and in one-to-one lessons we simply start from your very first words. No previous study, no schoolbook memories required — just an hour a week and a willingness to have a go.

Was Gloucester really founded by the Romans?

Yes — Gloucester was the Roman city of Glevum. A large legionary fortress was built here between AD 64 and 66, and in AD 97 the Emperor Nerva made it a colonia, Colonia Nervia Glevensium, a settlement of retired legionaries. You can still see the evidence today: the Nerva statue in Southgate Street, the East Gate remains displayed in the East Gate Chamber, and Roman mosaics found under the former Debenhams.
