Ciao! I’m Laura, a native Italian teacher from Catania in Sicily, now settled in Dursley, within easy reach of Cheltenham. Cheltenham’s Italian connection

Regency Cheltenham has always looked to Rome. The architect who shaped so much of the town, John Buonarotti Papworth, carried an adopted Italian middle name, and his Montpellier Rotunda of 1826 was modelled on the two-thousand-year-old Pantheon in Rome. He also gave the town Lansdown Place and Lansdown Crescent.

Stroll along the Promenade and you’ll pass the Neptune Fountain of 1893, said to have been inspired by the Trevi Fountain — Neptune in his chariot drawn by sea-horses, a little piece of Rome in Gloucestershire. The people who built Cheltenham looked to Italy for beauty, so learning Italian here simply continues that conversation — and I’d be delighted to teach you over Teams from my home in nearby Dursley.

Are your Cheltenham lessons in person or online?

You can choose. Most students prefer online lessons over Microsoft Teams for pure convenience, but I’m based near Dursley — not far down the road — so in-person lessons near me are possible too. Tell me what suits you and we’ll find the right arrangement.

How much do Italian lessons cost?

One-to-one lessons are £30 per hour. For beginners, my ten-week online course costs £150 in total and starts on Wednesday 16 September, running 5.00 to 6.30pm each week in a small group — kept nice and small.

I learnt a little Italian years ago — can I pick it up again?

Definitely — rusty Italian wakes up faster than you’d expect. In our first lesson we’ll see what’s still there, which is usually more than people think, then rebuild from solid ground. If it’s truly buried, the ten-week beginners course makes a gentle, structured fresh start.

Why does Cheltenham’s architecture look so Italian?

Because its Regency builders drew directly on Rome.
