Leicester’s Italian connection

Leicester’s Italian connection begins with the Romans themselves: the city was Ratae Corieltauvorum, a flourishing tribal capital with a forum-basilica, public baths and a grid of streets, and the Jewry Wall still stands as one of the largest surviving Roman masonry structures in Britain.

Centuries later, a small Italian community became established in Leicester in the nineteenth century, and — according to the family firm’s own history — Raphael Boccarossa and his family brought their Italian ice cream to the city in 1896, founding the business that became Rossa Ice Cream and traded for well over a century. To me, learning Italian in Leicester feels like continuing a very old conversation.

£30 an hour for one-to-one tuition, with lessons shaped around your goals. My ten-week online beginners course costs £150 altogether and starts Wednesday 16 September, 5.00 to 6.30pm — small and friendly, in a small group.

I only know a few holiday phrases — is that enough to start?

That’s a lovely place to start — you already know more than you think. We’ll build on those phrases, tidy up the pronunciation and grow them into real conversation. Whether you choose the beginners course or one-to-one lessons, those holiday words won’t go to waste.

Does Leicester really have an Italian history?
