Nottingham’s Italian connection

Football fans already know Nottingham’s most famous Italian link: Nottingham Forest have played in ‘Garibaldi Red’ since 1865, named in honour of the Italian freedom fighter Giuseppe Garibaldi. And the connection runs both ways — Herbert Kilpin, a Nottingham lace worker born on Mansfield Road in 1870, went on to co-found AC Milan.

During the Second World War, Italian prisoners of war were held at Bulwell Hall and Colwick Woods, and some married local women and stayed. Italians who arrived after the war put down roots too — Nottingham’s older Italians even became the subject of a published academic study. When I teach learners from Nottingham, I love reminding them that Italian is already woven into their city’s story.

Do you teach in Nottingham itself, or online?

Online over Microsoft Teams — I teach from Gloucestershire, and my Nottingham students join from home. Everything a good lesson needs happens naturally on screen: conversation, correction, reading together and plenty of laughter. All you need is a reasonable internet connection and an hour a week.

How much do your lessons cost?

Private lessons are £30 per hour, one-to-one. If you’re starting from scratch and like company, my online beginners course is £150 for ten weeks — Wednesday evenings, 5.00 to 6.30, beginning 16 September, with limited places.

Can complete beginners join your lessons?

Yes, warmly. You don’t need a single word of Italian to start — just curiosity. My beginners course was built precisely for first-timers, and in one-to-one lessons we simply begin at the beginning. By week two you’ll already be introducing yourself in Italian.

Why do people say Nottingham Forest wear ‘Garibaldi Red’?
