Leeds’s Italian connection

The Italian story in Leeds is one of people who came and stayed. During the Second World War, Italian prisoners at Camp 91 on Post Hill in west Leeds worked on local farms — and some made Yorkshire home for the rest of their lives. Italians were among the European communities who came to the city around the war years.

That warmth became institutions. Salvo’s of Headingley, opened by Salvatore Dammone in 1976, was voted the UK’s best neighbourhood Italian restaurant on Gordon Ramsay’s The F Word — and even Leeds United returned to the Premier League in 2020 under Italian owner Andrea Radrizzani. From farm fields to trattoria tables to football, Italian is already woven into Leeds; lessons simply make it official.

Do you teach in person in Leeds or online?

Online over Microsoft Teams — that’s how I teach all my students in Leeds and across Yorkshire. You’ll need nothing more than a laptop and a cup of tea. I share exercises on screen during the lesson and send everything to you afterwards.

How much are your Italian lessons?

One-to-one lessons cost £30 an hour. If a group suits you better, my online beginners course runs for ten weeks and costs £150 in total — Wednesdays 5.00 to 6.30pm from 16 September, kept deliberately small so nobody hides at the back.

Can I start as a complete beginner?

Of course — beginners are my favourite students to teach, because the progress is so visible. Whether you join my ten-week beginners course or take one-to-one lessons, we’ll start with real, useful Italian from the very first session. No previous experience needed at all.

Does Leeds really have an Italian connection?
