Birmingham’s Italian connection

Birmingham once had its own Little Italy. In the second half of the nineteenth century, an Italian quarter grew up around Fazeley Street in Digbeth, where new arrivals worked as street sellers and entertainers around the Bull Ring. By the 1891 Census, the heart of the quarter counted 53 residents of Italian birth or parentage — among them 19 organ grinders and 12 ice-cream vendors.

Birmingham’s Italians were best remembered as the city’s ice-cream makers, a trade that carried on until after the Second World War. When my Birmingham students learn Italian with me, they’re picking up a thread their city has held for a very long time.

Are your Italian lessons in Birmingham face-to-face or online?

Online, over Microsoft Teams. I teach from my home in Gloucestershire, and my Birmingham students join me from theirs — no traffic, no parking, no rushing across town. Lessons feel personal and lively on screen, and everything we work on is shared with you afterwards.

How much do you charge for Italian lessons?

One-to-one lessons are £30 per hour. For beginners who enjoy learning with others, I run a ten-week online course for £150, starting Wednesday 16 September from 5.00 to 6.30pm — a small, friendly group.

Can complete beginners join?

Absolutely — most of my students start from zero. My ten-week beginners course is designed exactly for that first step, and one-to-one lessons can begin wherever you are. With over twenty years of teaching behind me, I promise there is no such thing as a silly question.

Did Birmingham really have a Little Italy?

Yes — an Italian quarter grew up around Fazeley Street in Digbeth in the second half of the nineteenth century, nicknamed Little Italy. The 1891 Census recorded 53 residents of Italian birth or parentage at its heart, including 19 organ grinders and 12 ice-cream vendors.
